Self Directed Support
The Highland Health and Social Care Partnership shares the Scottish Government’s commitment to increasing the choice and control that people have around their care so that they are able to live as independently as possible. Through Self Directed Support (SDS) individuals can choose, direct and manage the care they receive.
Most people use their SDS package to purchase support from a service provider or to employ a personal assistant (PA). Local support is available to help people set up and manage their care packages.
The flexibility achieved is such that even those with the most complex and multiple needs can enjoy the benefits of SDS. Where appropriate, the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 can be a helpful safeguard for people.
From 2009-2011, Highalnd was one of three Scottish Government-supported SDS test sites in Scotland - the others being in Glasgow and Dumfries and Galloway. The test site activity was designed to promote SDS by making available bridging finance, reducing bureaucracy and enhancing leadership.
The Scottish Government published a 10-year National Strategy in 2010 and on 1 March 2012, a new Bill to strengthen SDS was introduced into the Scottish Parliament.
